What is Creative Dance?

Creative Movement,  Creative Rhythms, or Creative Dance are the terms used by dance studios for classes designed for their youngest dancers, typically 3 to 4 year olds.  In these classes, children explore movement and rhythm in order to increase awareness of their own physical potential.

The next level of dance training for young children is often called “Creative Ballet” or “Pre-Ballet.”  While these classes introduce the children (4-6 year olds) to some basic ballet terms, the emphasis is still on basic development of posture, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, and poise.

The next stages are different at different dance studios, but they typically include a range of beginning, elementary, intermediate, and advanced ballet classes.  More advance classes often include instruction on pointe, and Pas de Deux (partnering).

In reality though, all dance, whether ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, or modern, is a form of art that involves creative movement.
